The horseshoe-shaped obliterator on the 1859 50 grana King Ferdinand II stamp from Sicily (Sc. 18) is very nice indeed. And, quite scarce.
Here's an old obliterator from my collection. It is on a commercial postal card sent from Toronto to James Dingwall in Cornwall, Ontario in 1874. The Broken Ring CDS in the lower left corner reads TORONTO / ONT and PM / JU 1 / 74.
The indicium has been obliterated with a cirlce of diamond dots separated by five horizontal gaps and five gaps at a 45 degree angle. This cancellation is listed in Fred Jarrett's Stamps of British North America (1929), #1328, p. 534. It is also listed in Canadian Fancy Cancellations of the Nineteenth Century by Day and Smythes (1973), who numbered it 860 in their listing.
There is an arrival CDS, another broken ring postmark, on the back. Its faint, all I can read is ... CORNWAL / ONT and JU 2.
James Dingwall born in 1840, was a lawyer. based in Cornwall. His paternal grandfather, also a James Dingwall , was a United Empire Loyalist who had settled in the Mohawk Valley near Albany and came to Canada in 1783 following the American Revolution.
